Conscious me

Consciousness Awakening on Vimeo by Ralph Buckley

When you hear the word conscious you begin to imagine those cells that are working at a fast frequency in your brain. This is the power center, the nerve center which we identify ourselves and society by. But something has got me curious of late, more so in recent months…are we really consciously awake in present times? For some it’s probably too much of a profoundly deep question to ask and ponder on. As I look at how society is evolving, I feel fundamentally we are not really awake in our conscious as beings. I heard the other day that human beings are only using 5% of their potential at present; WOW…we have come so far in society progressing technologically, imagine what utilizing 100% potential could result in. So then there must be something wrong, something fundamentally flawed in the way we are utilizing our cognitive abilities that ultimately allow us to feel like we are consciously awake!

I look at all facets of life, from personal to business, from friendships to relationships, and from charity to wealth. Surely we could be more awake in what we do as beings to form a larger core impact on society? You know that feeling you have of being in a rat race? Well that’s another piece of evidence of mankind not being consciously awake. In business, we are no longer consciously awake to basic business principles and practice in such a way that will foster business processes to create better efficiency and production; instead we focus too much of the end goal of PROFIT. Imagine a society where there is a conscious awakening in each individual…I can visualize better productivity, better revenue returns, and hence increased profits which would ultimately be better utilized in opportunities for investments into more fruitful projects benefiting society, not just individuals or specific regions. Business would no longer face ethical issues as it currently does, nor would competition be the main game if all individuals were consciously awake to serve mankind better.

Now imagine the same scenario in relationships? Not just romantic level relationships, but friendships as well. The impact of social media has meant people have consciously gone to sleep, feeling keeping in touch through social media means this qualifies as having a fruitful relationship or friendship; we have accepted it as the norm. Whatever happened to individuals connecting in the real, engaging in actual conversation face to face on a more consistent basis; we tend to blame it on the increasingly ‘busy’ lives we have. We are only ‘busy’ because we are not consciously awake to what we could do to free ourselves in mind and space.

Ultimately conscious living and awakening comes to down to energy and energy levels. In order to be fully awake, we need to raise the energy levels we feel both physically and mentally, while also letting go of certain energies that become draining. As each individual becomes more aware of their ability to awaken consciously, society will be the main beneficiary…and possibly we would see a more balanced sense of living and purpose. There are many arenas which would allow for the conscious awakening of individuals, just do a Google search to find the thousands of processes out there!

The point is this: Think and ponder on what consciously being awake could do for you!

It’s Plane and Simple!

So there has been all this hoo ha about a certain wealthy Indian family in South Africa being granted access to land planes in a prominent military base. As usual, the media gets to have their fair share of story dramatization and creation. In fact, so much attention has been given to this story even radio stations are creating prime time slots to have discussions on this latest scandal on South African shores.

I found it amazing to hear the millions of South African people quickly pointing and accusing this family of wielding power and having the audacity to land their prominent members on a major military base. Let me be clear here: in no way do I support or say the actions taken by them were appropriate. But are we even looking at the would be powers who should have declined to act on or restricted this kind of action happening in the first place? Ha, but the world merely works on connections, and it will continue to do so. Hind sight is such a wonderful thing of course. The blame games will begin, but this family has much connection and influence with the Head of State, and such a connection is always an open door for compromises and promises, especially in a murky place such as politics.

It’s so funny how a majority of people are using the old tactic of looking off shores for blame rather than issues pertaining to their own back yard. I respect every country’s right to protect their prominent military locations, least of all from public use. Why aren’t major issues being brought more to the attention in this country, like the extreme violence, crime, slow justice system, corruption, nepotism, and state inefficiency? Has the society become so insensitive to such issues that it’s not worth bringing these to attention every single day? I can hear some now say that no we are bringing those attentions to the fore, though it’s not more important than a plane or two landing on our military base. Ridiculous!

Sadly when an action is taken by a foreigner in this land that is deemed inappropriate, people are quick to start pointing fingers and playing blame games. This is a trend I see carrying on until an understanding of how power and influence works will be brought to the fore, and until local injustices are resolved quickly in the face of increasing xenophobia. I see many prominent SA figures having considerable influence in domestic matters, and the same kind of attention needs to be brought to such figures who take questionable actions.

Perhaps in such situations before making accusations and judgements, we should look at the plain truths rather than focusing on plane truths!

Life-O-Graph

Every business cycle has an up and down pattern, the peak and trough situations that you see in many graphs depicting the movement of economic activity. Just as much as this happens in business, we know the same can happen in life with everyone facing a pattern of up and down moments. But today I thought about the fact that there could be a situation where sometimes we face an up and down situation, but our progress is on an upward trend.

Have you ever heard of the process where by you take one step back in order to move one further step ahead? This pretty much explains the upward trend in the up and down cycle. Sometimes we have to acknowledge that we will go through a down period in order to learn a valuable lesson which can help us move to the next level we seek. This is a painful process for most of us, partly because at the time we do not see the benefit of going one step backward.

This kind of thinking needs to be applied in the process of following our dreams as well. We will hit some troughs along the way; one should feel they are on the right path if they are facing such situations, for a smooth ride would only mean you are not aiming for a high level in terms of your potential and fulfilling your dreams. This is what I would call the Life-O-Graph.

Make sure you monitor your Life-O-Graph, learning all valuable lessons, and you will be well on your way towards fulfilling your dreams!

Fame Me

There’s something about receiving any news relating to a celebrity or famous person that takes up some of our thoughts in an usual way. It’s uncanny how we sometimes feel like we understand what the celebrity may be going through, especially in the case of bad news. Is it just because we feel for once someone we see or hear off more often is going through a troubling point in their lives, that we can finally we like we no longer are the only victims? It’s funny how often I see people get so entangled in the lives of celebrities, very often forgetting their own reality.

The use of social media and it’s viral spread ability has often blurred the lines between our own reality and the reality of celebrities. And I can only see things changing more as the times move on, with the possibility of a gaming platform being created where you can get relive the life of a celebrity and see what their world is all about…

Just imagine being able to relive the life of Michael Jackson, and it’s a thought that might get you thinking about some unusual characteristics!

Control it!

Here’s a short thought for this week: Have you ever had those moments where you feel you don’t have control? Control over your finances, control over your career, control of your friendships, control of your DESTINY? Do you sometimes feel that too much is happening all at one go, that the mainframe in your brain is about to blow! You can’t take it anymore!

As we watch negative events unfolding around the world (because this all the mainstream media can portray on the good old tube these days), this is an opportune time to start to see if you have control! Take control of your life, take control of your actions, and ultimately take control of your DESTINY! You will thank yourself down the line for seizing the initiative and wrestling away from the craziness of the world we live in!

An Oscar Performance

The red carpet is laid out. The celebrity guests and couples are beginning to arrive in their droves, dressed immaculately in all their latest custom designed suits and dresses. The scene is an atmosphere of flashing lights, lights emanating from the crazy global paparazzi looking for their piece of editorial glory! This is March, the month when the golden man, the Oscar, will be awarded to the over exuberant acting performances for Tinsel Town in the previous year.

But back home in South Africa there is another performance and drama happening in the picturesque Jacaranda city of Pretoria. This time the golden Oscar must be wondering who this other Oscar fellow is that is stealing his limelight.¬† I am not going to comment much about the case surrounding Oscar Pistorius and the tragic killing of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. There’s another dimension I want to comment on, something which has caught my attention in recent months.

I wrote about the recent controversy surrounding Lance Armstrong and his misgivings in December. I highlighted the many downfalls that come with high octane sport, especially with major commercial and endorsement deals being penned. But I am beginning to wonder whether being a sport celebrity is beginning to have many cons to it, that it as a life seems to have no major meaning anymore, even with such glorified moments such as a double amputee person being the first to run in a major non-paralytic  event. This kind of sporting celebrity life is short in itself, and there is enough drama a sportsperson will go through, least of all a murder case.

Growing up, I wondered and dreamed about what being a famous sportsperson would be like; I was naive, thinking all is great and good in this life, that many things come easily to you as famous sportsperson as compared to the man on the street. I might be a bit cynical here, but of late much of the major unbelievable achievements by such sportspeople are momentarily lived, before they are overshadowed by a major disaster or controversy surrounding them. I wonder if the aspiring kids in sports today are also wondering whether going through very brief highs like Oscar Pistorius did are worth it. Maybe the normal life is the life all kids will begin to dream of!

The Oscar Pistorius case has also demonstrated once again that society is becoming fickle; they are quick to ridicule someone who was once considered a major hero or heroine and role model. It was astonishing to see how many people reached many conclusions on social media platforms immediately that Oscar Pistorius was guilty when the news first broke out, even though many of the details of the case were yet to emerge! Society is perhaps becoming frustrated by the fact that their once cherished and honored heroes no longer portray these very characteristics, and society is constantly disappointed by the mysterious wrongdoings of such heroes. This is perhaps created by the expectations of such societies that border on perfectionism, and the reality is that these sports people cannot always have a perfect image, or that perfect performance like an Oscar performance!

The Realization

You would have recounted many times when you watched a movie scene with flashbacks. Very often these scenes have a hidden metaphor in which the main actor sees how a familiar place changes over time. The good thing about a movie is that the scene following on can be created to give a happy feeling.

But what happens when you have a realization over a shorter time that all is not what it used to be in your life, and it may not be the happy ending you envisioned? It’s an odd place to be in, with the mind playing all kinds of tricks. Familiarity is a state all humans embrace more easily because it provides a sense of comfort. The problem is when someone realizes that not everything is indeed what it used to be: people’s attitudes change, familiar faces become unrecognizable, distance increases, and so on and so on.

Perhaps what hurts people most is realizing people you felt had a meaning in your life don’t really feel the same way about you. I am not talking about the meaning that is seen in love relationships (although this is all too often). I am talking about people you valued, either an acquaintance or a close friend. They are there at the time, yet you can sense all is not what it used to be in the recent past. It’s uncanny how being away for a slightly longer period can change people’s mindsets towards you. You are not sure yourself what to make of it? What also happens when you feel ‘left out’; I am talking about the ‘left out’ from a mental point of view. It’s not an easy pill to swallow (excuse the pun).

It’s no surprise then that often in life you hear stories where people are missed most when they are no longer around in a person’s life. It’s an uncanny human behavior when people are valued most when they are no longer a constant in a person’s or peoples’ lives, or when they played a major influence on a personal or business level. It’s the truth, it hurts, but what can a person do?

My advice is to take it a day at a time. You need to be like a calm ship navigating its way through rough waters. Some moments will be a smooth ride. I truly believe people you valued most will ‘return’ when you least expect it. Patience is the true test during this period. And sometimes the realization will set in that you just have to let go. They may have fulfilled whatever purpose they had for your life.
